Hooker Valley Track

Hooker Valley Track

Given Queenstown is the birthplace of bungee jumping, it was only natural that bungee jumping would be on our itinerary. Upon further risk/benefit analysis, I determined that the risk of suffering from a heart attack was greater than the benefit of 2 seconds of adrenaline rush. So I abandoned the activity at the last minute. Instead, we chose to do laundry. A bit of downtime was welcomed given our nonstop schedule for the last 25 days.

For our final day in New Zealand, we went for an easy, but no less awe inspiring, hike. The Hooker Valley Track is located in the Mt Cook National Park, a 3-hour drive from Queenstown. I know it sounds crazy to drive such a distance just for a sub 2-hour 6-mile hike, but I figured it would be a good chance to see parts of the island we haven’t had the chance to see.

New Zealand, the land of 3-hour hikes no matter the distance or difficulty. I still can’t quite figure out how they come up with the time estimates as this one was so far from the mark.
This track is popular, as the glaciers are smack-dab-in-your-face from the parking lot. You don’t have to walk far to get a good view. Some visitors unfortunately turned around after the second suspension bridge, missing out on the Hooker Lake view.

What’s interesting is that this set of glaciers is on the flip side of Franz Josef glacier in the Westland Tai Poutini National Park. Makes me wonder if there’s a multi-day trail that connects one side to the other.

We both thought this was a rock when we first spotted it.
Cool!

Final thoughts on New Zealand. Pristine and spectacular landscape, with nice people who are outnumbered by the sheep population. This is one of the rare countries where Joe and I agreed that we will be coming back to, as we’ve barely scratched the surface. And what a beautiful surface it is.
