McWay Falls

McWay Falls

We are finally back in California. For me, this trip to Canada felt incomplete, but what can you do when Mother Nature has her own ideas. Wildfires aren’t just limited to Canada, as we have our own forest fires to deal with south of the border. However, unlike the ones up north that were triggered by lightning, the big Park fire in Northern California was intentionally set off by an arsonist. The Park fire is now the size of San Diego, and not close to being contained.

Instead of continuing down I-5 through Central Valley we opted to take the more scenic coastal route. Having driven through Big Sur several times in the past, there is one spot that I have never managed to stop at, and that is the McWay falls.

The 0.5-mile RT McWay Falls trail is part of the Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, and is easily missed if you drive by too fast on PCH.

McWay Falls is one of four waterfalls in the US that empties directly into the ocean.

If you ever find yourself driving on PCH in the Big Sur area, I highly recommend stopping at this vista point to witness this unusual tidefall.
