Hyatt Regency Sydney and Eats

Hyatt Regency Sydney and Eats

Our final leg of this trip is a 4-day stay in Sydney, a sudden jolt back to “civilization”. After 3 months of laidback traveling, it’s a nice change of pace. The Hyatt Regency Sydney is Australia’s largest hotel, catering to business travelers and conference attendees, and the energy is very different than anywhere else we’ve stayed in thus far. Everything is rush, rush, rush, an aspect of our old life which we have finally left behind. Ironically, time seems to fly by quicker when you take your time doing every task. The next thing you know, it’s 5pm, and you haven’t got much to show for, other than patting yourself on the back for finishing laundry.

Before arriving to the hotel I hadn’t held up much hope for an upgrade, but we were pleasantly surprised to get a harbor view studio suite in the new tower. The roadway traffic noise took some getting used to.

Panoramic view of Darling harbor
Not a true suite, but 50 Sq meters beats 28 Sq meters.
With the newer bathrooms.

View is much better when the sun sets.
We were even treated to (early July 4th) fireworks, when Tom Cruise was in town for his red carpet premiere of the new installment of Mission Impossible. He was reportedly staying at the Park Hyatt, which I had briefly contemplated booking for.

The Hyatt Regency is conveniently located within walking distance of everything, especially all the Asian eateries. Australia has the US beat for good SouthEast Asian food. We have reasonable East Asian food in SoCal, but you’ll be hard pressed to find good Malaysian eats. So our four days in Sydney was spent getting our fill in.

Gumshara– broth stewed over a 7-day period. Not Southeast Asian, but my favorite dish (10/10).
Black Star Pastry – watermelon cake is the bomb (10/10)
Back to Black Star Pastry – lychee cake (7/10)
XO Pipi – clams in XO sauce over pan crisped vermicelli (9/10) for me, but (10/10) for Joe.
Oh!Matcha – Thai iced tea and matcha swirl (10/10)
Chinatown Noodle Restaurant – Beijing pan fried bun (7/10)
Black Star Pastry again – black sesame cheesecake (8/10)
15cenchi – Japanese yuzu basque cheesecake (9/10)
Chaco Ramen – refreshing Yuzu scallop ramen (10/10)
Flour and Stone – panna cotta lamington (7/10), more moist cake than panna cotta.
