Penang SNAFU Righted

Penang SNAFU Righted

Since the main purpose of our trip to Malaysia was for the food, we made sure to visit Penang since everyone said it was the place to go for great food at all the little hawker stands. The first hawker place we visited had such great ratings online that we endured the heat to wait in line. However, I couldn’t get past how “shabby” the place looked, and all I could think of while eating my kway teow was ‘HEPATITIS A’. At the second hawker center, we weren’t quite impressed with the food. The next day, I was struck down with gastrointestinal drama. Psychosomatic or not, I wasn’t going to take any chances, and that was the end of our food tour. Back to the mall and restaurants we went.

We’d see all these lines at various hawker stands, but my tummy doth protest. Funny, I just noticed the 2 red Chinese characters 「衛生」(hygienic) in the background. If that’s not irony then I don’t know what is.

Adding insult to injury, 3 days in Penang turned into 5 when Air Asia canceled our Siem Reap flight, and rescheduled us to fly out 2 days later. Luckily, the street art in Georgetown salvaged our time in Penang.

There are so many little murals and graffiti scattered around town, but these are my favorite.

The trip to Penang wasn’t completely awashed as I had possibly THE BEST Indian food I’ve ever had in my life (I am no connoisseur when it comes to Indian cuisine, but I know what tastes good), and it ranks in the top 3 of our Malaysia trip.

  1. Actually we too had similar issues in Malaysia – but not from street food or street vendors, it was when we got up into the jungle trekking section in Kuala Tehan. Up there, because visitor numbers are unreliable, they are often in the habit of re-heating previously cooked food. We got caught by that, we think. Good that you recovered quickly.
